At the Wausau race, I will have a sign up sheet for members who would like to serve on a rules committee. The main task I would like to accomplish with this group is to go through the current IWA rules as they exist on our website and refine them so they are as clear and concise as possible. This committee will NOT be formed to make new rules or hash out what they think the IWA should do in the future. This committee will simply revise what we have into a more "user friendly" format. This might include proposing amendments to current rules or removal of certain stipulations that currently exist.

I spoke with Mark Maki about this prospect earlier in the year and he offered to help the IWA out by working within this committee. I believe that Mark is an excellent choice as he has been involved with the IWA since its inception and has much of the background knowledge concerning rules that the IWA has adopted and the scope of each rule as it pertains to what we are currently running.

If you would like to help with this process, there will be a sign-up sheet at Wausau. Idealy, I would like this group to meet sometime between the end of the Wausau weekend and the annual meeting (which I think will end up being either Oct 4th or Oct 11th) and be able to present a new copy of the rules to the IWA Board so it can be discussed and ratified at the annual meeting.

One rule that I think bears considerable discussion among the IWA board is the appearance of our Pro class sleds. I think we need to keep current looking equipment racing amongst our premier classes. How do we go about this? Current equipment is the ONLY way the IWA is ever going to move forward and gain credability. I'm not saying the equipment has to BE current, but it must LOOK current.

What are your thoughts on this?

do you consider a pol edge sled as none current ? I found a good deal on a fusion chassis but that is more none current then the edge.

mike you need to describe what is current then. The edge was made up till about a year ago in a trail model. what are you looking at? The pro class is looking good. The oldest looking sleds out there are the yamahas. My opinion is they should look nice and not worry so much the age. Look at the champ class in the ice. There is not 1 champ sled that looks like what the factory sells unless you are riding a houle sled and they look as close to a doo as possible. So what do we want to look for? New looking models or nice looking equipment? My opinion is nice looking equipment is what we should strive for in the mod classes.

Shawn, that is precisely the question I am asking. How do we make or enforce a rule about the appearance of the equipment. Should it be judged by a panel who is going to say it looks good enough or not? I think that keeping up with current equipment is pretty hard to do, especially with the mods. Heck, even the REV is now a non-current model. I think the pro class mods we have running right now are looking pretty good for the most part. If Wahl Bros. made a Champ hood that was offset to the right instead of the left I think it would make a KILLER looking mod sled. Unfortunately, it seems that we don't get judged like the ice oval ciruits do. People expect the champ sleds to look exotic but want our sleds to look like snocross sleds in order for us to look professional.

What I'm looking for here is ideas. I'm not pointing my fingers at any one brand of sled or any sleds in particular, I'm just looking for input on how we address the "image" factor and how it might affect the IWA as we look to the future

FYI

Both the polaris Edge and Gen 2 are more current than the fusion or the rev.

I think part of the appeal of Watercross is that as a spectator I can watch MY SLED on the water.

Ice ovals are actually a purpose built sled correct? I have never been to Eagle River.

You have got to agree with Ken. Sled age is not everything.

Mike, I don't agree with your sign up program. Appoint a committee of a cross section of drivers from all classes.

Having Mark Chair the committee would be excellent.

Steve, how can you appoint driver's if they don't want to volunteer there time? I think if to many people volunteer there time to be on this rules committee, the board can appoint who will be on it. I find that to be highly unlikely to happen.

What i am getting at is the equipment needs to look nice. NO JUNK! YOu can have a nice looking edge and a trashy looking edge. And for adapting plastic it is hard to adapt the newer a frame plastic to a non a frame sled. I think the stock classes need to look the most current. For the most part spectators love the noise and speed of the mod 8s and they move soo fast that i dont think it matters the body style. look at grass drags. They tried hard to make the twins compete in the mod classes as much as giving them alot of weight off the sled to compete. That was not the best thing to do and now they went back and look what is winning and still getting ink in the press. Older tripples.

I thought we were racing, not holding a beauty contest. When my sleds were built 2001 they looked really nice. After 7 years RACING them they show some of their age. They are still current model sleds. Should I be looking at repainting??

Come on. As long as the machine meets the 5 and 10 year rule and has no leaf springs why are we debating what they look like. Most waterx sleds are made from Wrecks. A limited few change them over for trail use. some look really nice, some don't. Are you implying that because my sleds are worn that I am any less professional or any less worthy of racing.

Get real!

What the rule should state is that the sled should be able to go back 5 years (so an edge 600 7 or 8 from 2000-2005 would be good) with at least 600cc engine in it. so the edge plastic would be good to 2010 since the last edge with a motor of at least 600cc was built in 2005. gen 2s would be outdated then. This is the smallest class we have for cc wise so that is how we should base our rules off of. This should go for all of our classes i think. That would make a zx outdated after this year. This would put the newer looking plastic out there.
