Have a 99 Hooper 440 engine with the 10200rpm. Hydroformed pipes currently.....Would there be a performance increase switching to a pair of Jaws pipes or is the difference minimal ? Thanks.......

Pipes are a science. Pipes work differently on each engine, even each cylinder. Crankcase Volume, cylinder volume, port timing, exhaust port width and height, reed angle, and etc.
Dyno your engine and put different pipes on it. There is alot of work involved in the science of pipes.
Gifford, Jaws, Crankshop, Decker, PSI, Aaen, Rugland, are all good pipes, but you need to find out what your engine likes and what you want to accomplish with the pipe.
Oval Racing - accelerating out of the corner and drag racing down the straight away? What happens too the pipe when you go into a decelerating mode for an instant and back on the throttle ?
These are things that you have too find out on the dyno with the engine loaded.

The latest Jaws pipes would probably not work any better than what you have now UNLESS the cylinders and heads were updated to the latest specs to match. The "Power inc." pipes you have now are still a good pipe for a lot of engines. John Hooper

Building a race engine package is like baking a cake. You can buy a mix out of a box that works (tastes) good but to really make a good cake takes a special recipe that has all the right ingredients in the right amounts. Pipes are just one of the ingredients and must be combined with everything else in just the right amounts to truly make a winning combination. John Hooper has worked for years to get the recipe right. We have our own recipe that works for us and may not work on a Hooper motor and vice versa. The best advice is to find an engine builder you trust and do a lot of dyno tests with a lot of different recipes. You may find that you already have a good mix. Adding another ingredient may just make your cake go flat!

If you are looking for a Dyno Tech and Engine Builder, I would use Doug Flannery in GunLake, Michigan. That is if you are close to Mich.
Doug has built many World Championship Sleds. Doug also races Vintage Ovals. So, if you want a bang for your Buck, Doug can help you.
If you are closer to Perth, Ont. I would use Steve Payne at Polar. Steve is outstanding also. Steve has done alot of R&D for me in the past for Drag Racing. Steve is now working closer with alot of Oval Racing teams. He is a fine Gentleman and Friend of mine. Steve has a great dyno and facility in Perth. If I was in Canada, He would be the only one I would use.
Both, understand Pipes and Engine Tuning for the results your after.
You can call me for Both of their Phone numbers. I am a personal friend of both.

You have to throw Larry Rugland into that mix. When you get a motor/pipe package from Larry, it just flat out works.
Howard hit the nail right on the head though, it's the "total package" idea that I think makes the biggest difference. You can't do anything expecting results without dyno time. I've heard that the Jaws pipes are the ticket for the Hooper motor, I don't know we haven't tried them yet. We also have the same hydroformed 10,200 pipes. We did test some Rugland pipes at Beausejour in March and saw some things that we liked. Bear in mind though that the pipes we tested were not built specifically for our motor. They were built for another Hooper Cat motor. I would guess that if I were to bring our motor to Rugland to have a set of pipes built, they would end up at least "slightly" different than what we tested with.
I've heard that running the Hooper champ motors on a dyno is tough because they have so little bottom end power that it's hard to get the dyno not to kill the motor before it's on the pipe? Any truth to that? We are looking to schedule some dyno time soon.

Your right Larry Rugland has been around along time and has got some of the best packages out there.
Doug Flannery and I will be doing some Dyno work on a few Cat motors in the near future. We will see how the Hooper does on the dyno with a few different pipe configurations.
We will also be performing Dyno runs on the Polaris and Rotax engines.
So if you need some Dyno work call 269-792-0070 or fax Doug at 269-792-0078. Flannery Motorsports and Clinton Motorsports are working together on some other projects.
