Sara Palin last night on national television said her husband Todd Palin is a world champion snow machine racer.

Has he ever raced at Eagle River before?

Can anyone give me any information on this?

Have any of you drivers ever raced against him?

I am not trying to get political on here by any means, I am just trying to figure out who he is and if he raced ovals.

Tesoro Iron Dog snowmobile racer Todd Palin -- husband of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin -- was taken to a clinic in Galena for examination today after a major crash during the 2,000-mile race.

Galena race checker Ray Debenham, a former racer, said Palin and teammate Scott Davis from Soldotna were on the outskirts of the onetime Air Force outpost along the Yukon River, racing at high speed toward a fuel stop, when Palin's machine hit a barrel hidden beneath fresh snow.

The impact stopped the snowmachine and sent the 43-year-old Palin flying.

"He flew about 70 feet off the machine, they said. He's going to have some bruises,'' Debenham reported by telephone from Galena.

After the crash, Davis stopped his snowmachine, went back to get Palin, loaded him up and took him straight to the clinic. Palin's snowmachine, which was left with one bent ski perpendicular to the other, was temporarily abandoned. Davis, 48, later borrowed a sled in Galena and went back and retrieved it while Palin was being checked out at the clinic.

Palin was not available for comment but was apparently given a clean bill of health by the Galena health aide.

"He's fine,'' Debenham said. "I just saw him. They were walking around. They're talking now about what they need to do to fix their machines.''

Palin and Davis are the defending Iron Dog champions. They were running second to race leaders Todd Minnick, 28, and Nick Olstad, 25, from Wasilla when the accident happened.

Palin was likely protected from serious injury by Iron Dog rules that require competitors to wear not only helmets but body armor as well.

He won the Iron Dog 3 times. The longest and arguably the toughest race in the world. It is a 2000 mile cross country race. Often run in below 0 temps.

I think it is safe to say he is a World Champion.

I agree that is a tough race and to win it multiple times is a great accomplishment.
It was my understanding that EAGLE RIVER has the trademark on the World Championship designation in snowmoblie (snowmachine in Alaska) terms.
Here is McCain and Palin in the great state of Wisconsin today campaigning and using the world champion term again.
A snowmobiler as VP? I don't know, but she looks good with that assualt rifle in her hands.

I agree with you on everything except calling him a world champion, if you want to be a world champion snowmobile racer you have to come to Eagle River Wisconsin in January and win the the Worlds Championship Snowmobile Derby, it is also tough and sometimes run below 0 like last year for example it was -20.

I do agree though it takes one tough son of a beech just to race in the Iron Dog, let alone win it 4 times.

Tough- Yes
Champion- Yes
World Champion- No

Ovals forever, I really hate to bring this up but!

Eagle River is a USA race that has coined it's self for marketing purposes the "World Championship"

One large race in the USA isn't the world. So if that Iron dog is the biggest race of it's type then it could be coined the World Championship as well.
