OK I just got back from a week away and I can not believe this is continuing.
Shawn,
The rule was always in place yes, But the 600cc change DID affect many people, including many of the top EWA drivers. As I said to Mike Benoy, who IS the IWA President, I felt that some concession is necessary for EWA drivers that want to run at grantsburg and the challenge. In order to make the sport grow I think this needs to happen. We will work out the details off line as we always have.
For the rest of you
The IWA has been around for a long time. Changing your rules for the sake of change seems to be an annual thing. It really doesn't matter though. Your board obviously feels that by making the sleds look great you will get better sponsors. This may or may not be true. Who cares.
What is really important is, How can we all work together to make this better for everyone? You guys won the challenge for the first time. Do you want to run it again without the best drivers? Do you want to be the best of the bottom or the cream of the crop? If there are no concessions for grantsburg and the challenge, which there have always been, some of the best drivers will not compete. We all agree that we want a professional, well run event right? So lets figure out how to make this work for watercross and quit bickering about what year the sled looks like. The EWA respects the rules of the IWA 100% but we need to introduce a little grey into the mix to insure the future of the sport.

Why are you guys always looking for concessions? Follow the rules like everyone else and quit complaining. We do have a vintage race new to Grantsburg some of your people could compete in that.

Mike,
Its called working together. Your stonewall My way or the highway does not get us anywhere. Maybe you should think before you type. We have always made concession on both sides for the past 7 years. We have 80 drivers and a different set of rules. Are you that full of yourself that you can't see the other side? Do you really think you and the IWA are King of waterx? We have dominated the EastWest challenge and put drivers who normally turn left in your final at your world championship every year for the past 5 years. I guess the real question is What are you afraid of? What does it do to your circuit to bend a little for another circuit?
FYI I would hardly consider our equipment as vintage. Our 10 year rule allows for some models you do not but they are just as good looking and better performing than yours.
I will reserve my other comments for a Phone call. Perhaps you Mike Benoy and I could have a conference call. I am more that willing to discuss things off the net to come to a reasonable agreement for ONE RACE. Not for the entire circuit. I hope your opinion does not represent the entire board.

To everyone:
We announced the 600mod 800 stock changes at our banquet and already explained the hood thing. Really we are talking about 1 brand this year (Polaris Gen2) and 1 brand next year (skidoo zx) If you read the rules, as written, it says the belly pan for pro must be from a 2002 or newer (5 years) You can get an edge hood that fits a gen 2 belly and looks really good.
I also recommended to all the EWA drivers that if you are considering change it would be best to change to a current year.
That being said.
How do you explain the concession to a local driver?
Tell the local driver if he or she wants to run in the IWA they need to follow the rules. Any concessions which have happened every year for the past 7 years would be only at the challenge hosting site and for only the visiting drivers. Some examples from the past
Numbers for EWA drivers have not always been black on white or white on black.
IFS appearing was the allowance years ago.
800 IWA stock sleds allowed in 600 Mod last year.
There have never been any requests that would give an unfair advantage.
Bottom line suggestion was that the EWA drivers at least change to an edge hood style. Preferably the IQ. Skidoo guys will need to go Rev next year.
Would you rather turn away a driver willing to travel 20 hours and pay good money to race for the sake of a minor appearence issue for one annual event? In my opinion I would rather see the driver come and race than sit home because the body wasn't 100% correct.
The IWA and EWA have been building a great relationship for many years and yes we talk about rules and changes every year. Next year we are mandating Orange Helmets. Do you think I would turn away an IWA driver because he had yellow? Never.
I guess I have typed enough. I am very passionate about watercross and its direction. We in the EWA have a different dynamic than the IWA and we have almost completely rewritten our rules around the IWA program. That should tell all of you how much we respect and admire your organization. We do still operate differently though and we should (both sides) work together for growth. Come to the EWA in 2010 and we will again show the IWA the hospitality and friendship we have done since the challenge was concieved.

In my opinion by winning the challenge you have elevated yourself to #1 not 7th. The challenge is very hard to win and harder to win again. Great job.
