With the class up for review( I think in 2010) and the lack of 440 (skidoo ) motors that ARE going to be available soon. Should we look a starting a NEW CLASS!!!
I know what you guy's are saying. " A new class. Forget it we need more racers and less classes..." I said the same thing???
With the 600 motor as the new kid on the block we need to talk about what we can do to run these motors with each other but on a fair playing field.
We also have to think of COST. ( I understand the work put into the 600 is much less than the 440 )
This is what I think might work. Just my thought's.
Both motors can be modified.
The 440 get's 38 mm carbs and twin tune pipes.
The 600 get's 34 mm carbs and single tune pipe or stock pipe, stock Y pipe.
My thought's are coming from a father with a 15 year old son trying to look at the future of this sport.

JEFF,
Good ideas, but you must have too much time on your hands.
You guys already on the ice up there????
I haven't even got my 440 done for this season yet let alone worrying about 2010. See you in Valcourt.
Cheers,

I think you have some valid ideas. I think the class will go to 600 mod. To me, that is the easiest progression and every manufacturer makes a 600 (except Yamaha)

Jeff I'll think about what you proposed and talk to you in a month in Beausejour. Yamaha has no direct involvement in Oval Sprint Racing at this time, but I do know they had much to say about how the new Formula 600 rules were wrote in the new ISR book. Makes me think they have ideas of getting involved in the 2010-2011 season. The biggest advantage the 600's have now is the pull out of the corners over the 440s. Some of the things you talked about would even things out some, but I just have to think about it a little more.

We were one of the few teams that raced a new super stock 600 last season. Ours was a ski doo 600 RS. I think its fair to say that the new generation 600's in stock trim are probably equal the the modified versions of the 440's give or take a few hp. That's not to say that a set of twin pipes wouldn't be a nice touch but I think you could save a lot a dough just dropping a 600 stocker with pipes in there. That combination should produce the same results we're seeing with the current champ class. I know it's not a MOD but folks are always saying that racing costs too much!

It sure wouldn't hurt my feelings to run a sled on 92 octane pump gas rather than the $15/ gallon race fuel.

That would be a good place to start anyway, the day is going to come when the only way to get factory support is with a 600 motor.

The key to getting the two engines on equal ground as far as power goes is having the small carbs and single pipe/stock wye pipe on the 600. Even as a MOD, the single pipe, and 34's will restrict the 600's power to a very similar level to a 38 carbed 440.

Darcy is correct and I can live with what Jeff was proposing. Now some of you make it sound like he's talking a stock 600 and in stock trim. He isn't and if we're going to a stock 600 to replace champ class you can leave me out. If the motor can't be mod and if it can't have at least one tuned pipe oval ice racing doesn't interest me. Remember thats MY opinion and nobody elses, if everyone else differs with me thats fine. I can always take up ice fishing in the winters. A stock 600 will run with some of the champs now, but believe me they won't beat the elite champs that ran say last year. Truthfully it would be nice to see someone drop one in for the race on Saturday in Beausejour and see how it pans out.

I like the thought of a stock motor and pipe for the 600! I think it would bring more factory involvement seeing as we are actually running a factory motor. It would also make it a more level playing field. Every body wants to see close racing and I believe this would be the key.
Now on the 440s with bigger carbs, mixing motors hardly ever works fairly, so maybe have a champ 440 class for two years so people can run their old stuff but then drop it.
Just my opinion,
