The idea of a stock motor sounds nice, but in reality its got some complications.
#1- Tech. Right now tech inspection on a champ sled is very easy to do. (Bore and Stroke)You can do whatever you want inside the motor basically. Imagine the hassles if you were not allowed to touch the ports or any bottom-end work. The tech guy would spend hours in everyones trailer tearing them down. The current system works so well right now, I think thats one thing our sport has going for it.
#2- Spy-guy hit it dead on. The ingenuity that your allowed to express in the current champ 440 class is very hard to find in any other forms of racing. The engine builder has alot more room to work than anywhere else. If you start going to everyone running the exact same engines the class might get boring. Champ 440 (or 600 or whatever) is meant to be the elite class, not some cookie cutter class.
If you think running race gas is such a big deal and would rather run on pump gas, put in a compression ratio rule. I know with the Legends cars that my old man races, 180psi max. It takes no time at all to test and is very easy to control.
I personally think that the open 600 running on racegas with a stock wye, and an open single pipe makes the most sense. Carb size can be determined to be 34-38 whatever as long as its the same for everyone. Sorry to get long winded.

I guess I would rather see the motors stay stock than go with a mod motor and a single pipe to restrict HP. It would be more cost effective for the teams to go with a stock motor and twins. Ask anyone who has built a good sprint motor if it cost any less to get a good single pipe setup working than it does for twins.
Jeff has a very good point on the tech aspect though. It is a huge undertaking to ensure that motors are stock compared to the bore and stroke check like they do now.

I'm sorry not to be with everybody stock mind.
Come-on. It's top notch racing, meaning not exacly top dollars.
Woul be to much time in tech and don't forget that public identify with something they can't get, like in any type of racing. If you want to race in stock, no problem, BUT NOT in the Champ class.
Wake up, it means, be the best at every side of that class. > Engine tuning + Clutch + Looks of it + Been pro at it + Finding the sponsor and be part of the Class to watch. Factory don't get involve,To bad. They would'nt anyway cause of less snow, less interest from family and automaticly selling less sled.
Sorry, not everybody like what i'm saying.
Don't start tinking that i have money coming out of my pocket, Thrue i have a lot of equipement but no money in the bank. That's the way i live (wife not to happy with that ), but she understand me. RACING is important in my life.
Bye

All very good points - and it makes for a very interesting post! One thing that I'm hearing is that (at least in Champ or whatever the top class is) money is not really a problem! Is that Correct? If so - I understand the logic. By the way JV - You've got a very understanding woman there! And "Happy 55th Birthday"!

Good feed back everyone.
Lets not get off track.
This IS a mod class there's nothing stock about it. The only stock part is the Y pipe.
My thoughts are we can keep people racing with there 440 motors at no extra cost.( the money has already been spent ) and at the same time let the 600 mod motors ( with the single pipe ) merge into the Champ class.
Tech should not be an issue as far as I can see. Because its a mod class.....
Wally - Marcel - Jerry
Lets hear from you guys.

The one thing that I can see being a problem with merging the two together in the Champ class is if the 440 package ends up being a better one than the 600. we have to make sure that the 600 package is as good or better than the 440's. If they are not, everyone will still stick with the 440's and the whole thing will be a waste of time. Either that, or let it be know a year or two in advance that the 440's will no longer be allowed. That way everyone has lots of time to get a 600 ready and even test.

think this year might be a learning year for open 600. in the ISR book is written some new rules rod ends min. dia. four stroke rules, if we get any new 4 strokes and see how they run against what we have for 2 stroke now. we can learn good or maybe bad things before this might be a top of the best.
i do like the stock wye pipe ideal.

i dont understand why you say it is so hard to find 440 skidoo motors they build 500 a year just for snow-x racing sence 1999 ? parts and motors still in parts system as new

how do you figure a stock motor would save any money. The well funded teams would buy ten and dyno all of them to see which one is best. Or buy 50 cyclinders to find two with clean or bigger ports. Was involved with asa stockcar series when they went to the ls1 motor. Saved money for 1 year and then it cost everyone more in drive line than the old v6 program.

actually, because times were getting harder to sell the 500 built packages they drop them to 300 built a few years ago.. but yes, they are still out there.
