try heat. Normally i get the puller in and crank it tight by hand...no impact. Then apply heat and maybe tap with a dead blow hammer.

Old Bart,

It's a big hammer filled with sand or shot to help absorb some of the blow. Won't bounce back as much.

Do you have the right puller? the newer longer pullers won't work with that old of a clutch. Tighten it with a box end wrench, put a decent amount of torque on it, tap it with a hammer, even a decent sised mini-mall or ball peen hammer. You need that impact from the mettal to metal to break the wedge fit. using a plastic hammer just isn't going to cut it and its going to make things more difficult and confussing. Keep tightening some more and tap it again or at the same time, keep repeating this tell it comes of. it might help to put a little grease on the tip and threads of the puller. dont be scared of it! a lot of guys are but the odds of doing any dammage to the crank are slim. I use a peice of aluminum stock or an old aluminum radius rod to hold the clutch when torquing on it. Good luck! it's realy not as difficult as it seems and as some make it out to be.
