The bars are offset quite a bit, it's just hard to tell in that pic. Padding is to keep the driver comfortable and concentrating on the task at hand.

when you get on that sled and get in position, you are kinda "locked" in. I think it really helps with consistency. These sleds are so light and so aggressive that I think it really helps the driver to be as consistent as possible with his body position
